Based on information released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained starting from October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has stated that the real toll is almost certainly significantly greater, as a result of hundreds of unaccounted for individuals in Gaza.

Civilian Deaths

“This is not just an individual case occasionally. It is institutional and it is likely to persist,” a spokesperson said, partially due to the fact there is a environment of virtual exemption from consequences for fatalities and maltreatment of Palestinians.

Only a single instance of attacking prisoners has proceeded to court, with the service member given a penalty to 210 days. Lack of Accountability

“Regardless of this significant total of deaths, over two years not a single person has been detained,” the official noted. “There exist no charges over any death.

“As long as these practices are being applied, each Palestinian individual in confinement is at peril, including the physically well individuals, also the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Several casualties in confinement have been publicly known, for instance a 50-year-old healthcare leader who perished in confinement after four months in custody.

A detainee incarcerated with the individual reported that he was led to the courtyard by prison staff immediately preceding his passing, clearly wounded and unclothed from the lower body. His corpse has not been returned to Gaza.

Other prisoners who lost their lives in Israeli custody remain anonymous. The prison service and armed services gave researchers with the total of deaths in detention, and basic additional information including the site where they perished, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems

In 21 cases, mostly individuals from Gaza, investigators were not able to correlate the minimal data given by authorities to a casualty recorded by advocacy bodies, either through accounts from freed prisoners or coverage in the press.

The detainees’ families might not have learned about their relatives’ casualties as well, as Israel has impeded efforts to locate Palestinian individuals it is detaining. During 210 days at the beginning of the conflict, the defense forces declined to supply fundamental details about the whereabouts of numerous of people held in Gaza, effectively implementing a policy of involuntary missing persons, per the advocacy organization.
