British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
