Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.
