The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
